Academic Plan

After meeting with an advisor I came up with my academic plan. I will need all classes that are required for a buisness major and then some. I will be majoring in accounting and I will need classes like micro and macro economics, marketing, accounting one, two, and managerial accounting. I then plan on transferring to Wichita State University after Butler to continue on with my major of accounting.

Learning Profile

1. Some of the themes that stuck out to me this semester was the time management, coping with change, and reading. The time management stuck out to me because now that I am in college I really need to know how to manage my time wisely. With the activities I am doing and my job I really need to focus on how I plan my schedule. I also have to make sure I am able to have school time and be able to study and get work done for the classes. Coping with change also stuck out because there is a lot of change in the first semester of college. I have new classes, new people, and a new lifestyle. All of this was thrown at me and I needed to know how I was going to be able to handle them without being stressed. The third one that stood out was the theme read. I don't really like to read and has never been a strong point, but I realized it is good to read and there are different ways to get the information. I also know now that it is important to read to get valuable information.

2. I think some of my strengths as a learner is I can retain information by hearing it. I also am a good studier and I think that helps. When I listen in class if I write down little notes I can put that together with what I had learned in class. I also can study well by looking over my notes several times and knowing what I need to know. I think some of the things I could help a student learn coming into this class is learning how to get the blog going an dhow to use the online setup. I also think I would be able to explain some of the information that is in the book in themes that we learned about.

3. Some weaknesses I noticed I had was I can't concentrate very well when it comes to reading. I tend to just read the words, but not understand what is being said in the text. I know when we read something in class some of the other students can read what is to be read and tell you all about what happened. Me on the other hand, I don't know what was said because it's hard for me to concentrate on what is being delivered. One tasks that seems to take up the most of my time is studying. I know how to study I just need to be more strict with myself. I need to have no distractions or I won't be able to study like I would like to. I need to work on time management to help me in the future. I always put things off until the end and then I am struggling to get the work done.

4. I know a big thing that has help me with this class is time management. I definately have gotten better with managing my time. When I first started this class I fell behind and had a lot of work that was to be caught up. This class taught me to manage time wisely and I am way better with managing my time with the help of this class. I think a very important matter in this course was couping with change. I think this is so important because we go through so much change starting college and moving away from our homes. This is a huge step in our lives and we really need to know how to cope with the changes so we can still succeed. The most important skill I learned was how to store things in short term memory of long tem memory. This was able to help a lot in the way I studied and how I remembered things.

5. Topics I thought were very important and relevant to me were the time management, and coping with change. These were very important to me, because they were two things I needed most. I am not very good at managing my time, so I needed a way to structure my time with work, tutoring, and school plus my personal life. I needed to find a way to fit all of these activities in my schedule and still succeed. Also coping with change was big to me cause I wanted to be able to handle the differences and still be able to do well in school and everything else I wanted to try. One subject that wasn't that important to me was the community service. I don't have a problem with doing community service, I think it is a great idea. I just don't think community service has anything to do with how I succeed in college. This would not make it harder for me to get through college if I didnt participate in it.

6. I thought the course was informative. The course went thourgh chapter by chapter and explained what was to be done each time. We were able to understand the material that was being taught by the chapter review. We were also able to do a little deeper into our chapters by doing the discussion questions and the blog. This helped us understand what was really being said in the chapter. I don't think a whole lot should be added if any. I think the course was well structed and we knew what we were suppose to do. I think the next time the course is offered it will still be very good and well structered.

7. The three most important things you should do in this class to keep your sanity are, ask questions, be dedicated, and don't wait till the last minute. Sometimes classes that do a lot of work online can be confusing. With independent study there is a time where once a week you come in to work, this should be the time you ask questions. Ask the teacher what specifically is to be done. Make sure you know everything you are suppose to be doing. Make sure you are dedicated. This is very important. Just because you do not have to go to this class often doesn't mean you do not have to do the work. Make sure you do all the work. Do a little bit each day. Do not wait until the last minute. There will be to much work to do and you will not get it done within the required time.

8. I think that all of these topics can be incorporated into my life somehow. Some more than others. I know some of them are already starting to take a roll in how I live my life and am able to accomplish things while I am in collge. I think as I get older some of the topics will play a bigger role in the things I have to do. Time management will definately play a large role in the work life and when I start a family and potentially have kids. The skills I have taken from this class will also help me in the future with dealing with new challenges that come my way.

Academic Honesty

Some of the issues surrounding academic honesty is kids doing work that is not their's. They will have other people do their work for them and call it their's. The definition of plagiarism is the practice of claiming someone else's work for your own. Some of the reasons students resort to academic honesty is laziness. Kids are to lazy to do their own work or they just don't have time with everything else they are doing. Another reason is they don't understand what they are doing. They think what they are doing is too hard and they then end up cheating. There are several ways to help decrease the amount of cheating. First off a professor could teach better. They need to outline what is to be done and say specifically what to do. Another way is to try to develop integrity into the students. Help make them more honest students. These are just some of the ways to help decrease the cheating.

Butler Resources

Some of the things that Brook needs to change is his partying and study habits. Partying could be a big part of college, but in reality you need to realize the real reason why your here, to learn and get an education. Parties can be acceptable, but when they become your life prioritze need to change. Brook first off needs to limit his partying to maybe to weekends or not at all until he can raise his grades. Brook also needs to find some help on campus, whether is tutoring or counseling to help some of his problems. Brook also needs to realize he won't ever be like his roomate the worst thing to do is wish to be like someone. He has his own talents and they won't be the same as his roomates. Some of the resources I know are available at Butler is the tutoring lab upstairs in the 600 building. This lab is open through most of the day and there is a regular tutor to help you in all subjects in school. There is also counseling on campus if Brook needed to talk about his drinking habits and maybe the issues he has with his parents. There are also many places around the area that he could go to, to have quality studying time to himself. The library in the 600 building for instance on campus. He could also turn to older educated people that they trust to help him with his issues.

Community Service

I think hunger around the world is a large issue that needs to be solved. I think this issue is trying to be solved and people are constantly working to get a solution. One way to address this issue of hunger is the poverty level. Most of the people who have gone hungry are in the poverty stage. They don't have the money to by food or let alone have land to grow their food. So the first step to solving hunger is to get the poverty issue under control. Another way to help the issue of hunger is to get more people involved and they need to know more about the issue of hunger and how to help out themselves. The more fortunate people in the world may not be educated enough to know how big of issue this really is. I think it would be good to get more people educated and to learn more about this so they would be willing to try to make a difference in helping this matter. Another way to solve this issue is to start organizations of large groups of people to help donate food and other things to help these people out. When you have a group of large amounts the word will spread and more people will want to contribute to the wellbeing of the less fortunate. What I can do about this issue on a local level, I could possibly start a car wash, or bake sale, or something along that line to raise money. The money that is raised from something like this could be giving to a larger well known organization that will give it to the people who need the help.

Time Management

Time management is an important thing that goes along with college. You have to know how to manage you time wisely to succeed with the everyday stress of college. You have to set goals for yourself to make time management easier and more successful for you. The way I feel when I manage my time unwisely is overwhealmed. I start to get stressed and then I tend to worry. My mind is always concentrating on things I need to get done instead of me being relaxed and calm. The way I feel when I have managed my time well is relaxing. I no longer have to worry about getting something done before the deadline because it has already been done. I set reasonable deadlines for myself that way I get what I need done. The time I managed in high school is way different from now. In highschool I always had class time to rely on to get things done and teachers set out everything that was suppose to be done and told us when it was to be done. I have seen progress. I struggled when school started and it was different adapting to the new lifestyle of college rather than high school. I feel that I am slowly maturing in my judgement I am starting to realize the importance rather than thinking I am good enough to get things done at the drop of a hat.

Coping With Now

Some of the changes that have been most difficult for me since starting college have been waking up and being to class on time, and making sure I can balance school with two jobs. These changes have been difficult for me because I'm not used to being put in this situation. In high school everything was just givin to me and I was expected to be there and do the things. In college I do what I want it's my responsibility to get things done. The other challenge of school and two jobs is difficult I don't have a lot of down time to get homework done. Therefore, I have to organize my time wisely to get things done. In the past I have been one to initiate change. The response I have gotten from others was positive yet sometimes negative. Some people liked the changed and were glad I approached it and others were not open. Some emotional changes are I have been stressed out more. I don’t know what to do with myself and become overwhelmed. The change that has caused me the most anxiety is getting everything done when it needs to be done. I get stressed not knowing if everything has been prepared and finished. Some attitudes that hinder my change are negative. When I’m not willing to perform to my abilities or people who are close to me doubt my abilities. Overall change has definitely affected me since I’ve been in college. Each different changed that comes my way I learn to new ways to approach the situation and am more prepared to fix it.
